Ruffled Bag Tutorial

We have dance competition coming up soon and I wanted a cute bag to use!  Since our colors are black and pink, I knew this would be perfect!

Supplies Needed:
Black Canvas Bag (12" width x 18" height)
Light Pink Ruffle Ribbon
Sewing Machine threaded with Light Pink Thread
Straight Pins
Scissors
Hot Glue Gun
Wood burner tool (optional)

Directions:
Step 1: Cut three strips of the ruffle ribbon about 40 inches long.  Seal the edges of the ribbon with the wood burner tool.  If you do not have this you can skip this step.

Step 2: Sew a straight line down the center of the ruffled ribbon.  (We are going to ruffle it even more!)  Back stitch at the beginning, but not at the end.

Step 3: Do not backstitch at the end.  When cutting the thread at the end, leave the two threads long.

Step 4: To make the ruffle, hold one thread still and pull the other thread tight.  This will create a bunched look.  You will need to continue and push the bunch towards the opposite end of ribbon.  The goal is to create an even ruffle, so you do not want it all gathered at one end and not the other.

Below is my evenly spaced ruffled ribbon.

Step 5: You will have a long and short thread.  Once the ribbon is about 26 inches long, tie the two threads together in a double knot at the end of the ribbon.  Cut off the excess.

Step 6:  To finish off the edges, fold over the ribbon 1/4th inch and glue it down.

Step 7: Repeat steps 2-6 with the other two strips of ribbon.

Step 8: Pin the ruffles to the top of the bag about 3/4th inch away from each other.  Keep the stitches parallel with each other.

Step 9: Sew the ribbons to the bag, keeping your new stitch over the previous stitch.  You will want to use black thread for your bobbin here.

Enjoy your ruffled bag!
