Kentucky Derby Fascinator Tutorial

My friend wanted a small headpiece to wear to the Kentucky Oaks.  She had a red floral dress with navy accents, so I thought this would be perfect!  I made the flower and added the feathers.  This clippie is small but makes a cute impression!

Supplies Needed:
Red Netting (4" width)
Red Felt Circle
2 Red Felt Strips (1/2" x 3")
2 red feathers (about 6" long)
Navy Spring Feathers
Red Fabric Rose
Metal Aligator Clip
Needle and Red Thread
Hot Glue Gun

Directions:
Step 1: Pinch the ends of one side of the mesh and glue it with the hot glue gun.

Step 2: Carefully pull the thread on the opposite end of the mesh so that it begins to ruffle.  Cut off the excess thread.  Pinch this end and glue it with hot glue.

Step 3: Holding one end, circle the netting so that it makes a rose shape.  Make sure that you meet the two ends and glue them together.

Step 4: Glue the two large red feathers to the felt circles.

Step 5: Glue the spring feathers over the red feathers.  Overlap them at the bottom so that they criss-cross each other.

Step 6: Glue the netting rose at the center of the felt circle.  Use your needle and thread here to secure this.  A couple of stitches in the center and along the edges will secure the netting so that it keeps its shape.

Step 7: Glue the fabric rosette to the center of the netting rose.  This will hide all of the hot glue spots of the netting.

Step 8: Glue the aligator clip to the back of the felt circle.  Position this so that it will lay right in your hair.

Step 9: Open the aligator clip and glue the two strips of felt down to the circle.  This will keep the clip in place.

Enjoy your Derby clippie!
